Air Conditioning Repair: Some Necessary Steps for Keeping Allergies at Bay

When you or your family members have allergies, indoor air pollution can wreak havoc. This is because indoor air pollution may cause more damage to your health than you can even realise. And did you know that your HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system can be detrimental to your health by spreading allergens and affecting your health in the worst way possible!

·         Always Opt for Regular Maintenance
We’ve all heard of the adage ‘A Stitch in Time Saves Nine’.  It applies to air conditioning repair as well. More often than not, a faulty HVAC system is the source of all sorts of moss, mildew, pollens and other allergens. Sometimes, even food allergies and eczema can be triggered due to it. When you opt for regular maintenance and upkeep of the air conditioning, it will help cleanse the system and therefore get rid of all the allergens. At the same time, this will help keep the system running in the best way possible and save you further expense and agony.

·         Change the Filters More often than not, dirty filters are the main culprit as these can trap the dust, allergens, dirt and debris and let them enter your home. This build-up can be immensely detrimental to your health and hence, you need to change them from time to time, usually every two months during the use.  Because every HVAC system is different, you need to make sure that you change the filters from experts who know their job and have years of experience in handling HVAC repairs.

·         Clean the Air Ducts
Just like cleaning the filters, you also need to make sure that the air ducts are clean as well as these components are also susceptible to harmful particle and allergen build-up. You can get a routine inspection done of the ductwork. This will make sure that when you run the HVAC, these particles aren’t spread indoors and cause harm.

·         Maintain Humidity Levels
It is also necessary to keep the humidity levels of your home at an ideal level as this will help you curb several allergens such as pollen, dust mites and several airborne particles that can contaminate your surroundings. To begin with, you can have humidity levels between 43%-50% for healthy conditions in your home. But then, it depends on your local weather and the type of system you have installed in your home. For instance, most of the HVAC systems with central air may have a certain level of in-built humidity control. This will help you gain more control over the level of humidity that exists in your home.

Pro Tips: It’s easy to repair or replace your air filter, but then, there are several other essential steps that you can take to lessen the amount of harmful pollutants and allergens in the first place. In no particular order these are:
·         Vacuuming your carpet, upholstery and furniture on a regular basis. This will eliminate most of the allergens including pet hair, dust and any other loose particles.
·         Opt for allergen-free materials for all your household items and countertops.
·         Keep all the surfaces in the home and outside clean on a regular basis, especially any left-over food or drinks as these may invite pests that can spread germs.
·         Clean your tiles and grouts as well because these can also lead to the growth of mildew that can prove harmful.
·         Make sure that there’s ample sunlight so that it doesn’t foster the growth of fungi which thrive in dark, moist and cold places.
·         Grow some indoor plants that can act as natural air-purifiers.

Why My Air Conditioner is Not Cooling the Room?

Isn't your air conditioner blowing cold air? If so, then this can be an emergency. There can be several reasons why these systems break down, a few of which are listed below:

Clogged Air Filter- When the filter in these systems gets choked, it becomes difficult for the air to pass appropriately thereby reducing the cooling capacity of the air conditioner. An expert technician can analyze the situation better and take necessary actions. In these cases, cleaning the air filter or replacing it helps.

Dirty Coils- If your AC system is not under regular maintenance, then the condenser coils are prone to get loaded with dirt and debris. The condenser functions like a radiator and dissipates heat. It is imperative for the condenser to be clean because when it is dirty, the rest of the system becomes less efficient in cooling the room.

Insufficient Coolant- The function of coolant is to circulate through the evaporator coils and cool the air flowing over it. When the level of coolant becomes insufficient, the system fails to throw the cold air. Hence, getting the coolant refilled can rescue you from this situation.

Faulty Compressor- As many know the compressor is the essential part of an air conditioning system which is responsible for cooling the room. Another reason why air conditioners fail to cool the room includes a defective compressor. The compressor is an electric motor which compresses the coolant or refrigerant and passes the refrigerant through the coils (evaporator and condenser). If the compressor malfunctions, then this cycle gets affected and the AC system fails to cool the room.

Faulty Thermostat- A thermostat is a sensor that grasps the room temperature and signals the compressor to start or stop the cooling cycle. If it is defective, then the compressor may not get when to start the cooling.

Other Defective Parts- The other technical reasons why an air conditioner may not be cooling the room adequately can include a faulty run capacitor, bad thermistor, faulty motor, choked capillary, defective control board, etc.

High Atmospheric Temperature- The capacity of an air conditioning system depends mainly on the size of the room and its temperature. If the room's temperature shoots up beyond the limit, then the efficiency of the AC system goes down and hence, it fails to keep the temperature cool.

Important Guidelines to Install a Split AC

·         Strength of the wall- The wall on which you are willing to install an AC should be strong enough to hold its weight else it can lead to physical damages.

·         The spacing between the wall and AC unit- This is crucial to assist proper functioning of an AC unit. The unit must be at least 15 cm far away from back wall and ceiling. Adequate air flow will maintain its performance and will not wear out anytime soon.

·         Height from the ground- Just like the position of the unit from the back wall is crucial; similarly, the height at which the AC needs to be installed is essential. Approximate height of seven to eight feet is adequate for its placement. It will maintain cooling inside the room.

·         Tilt angle- To maintain the unrestricted flow of condensed water, the AC unit should be fixed at a tilt angle. It can be achieved by setting the aluminum bracket at an angle slightly tilting than usual.

·         Correct location of the outdoor unit- To leverage full cooling benefits of an AC, fix its indoor and outdoor units at a dry place away from direct sunlight. The outdoor unit is always mounted in an open space to allow it to release the heat generated from the condenser.

·         Placement of outdoor unit- A flat and rigid surface should home an outdoor unit. A compressor, condenser, fan motor and other essential parts are encapsulated inside an outdoor unit. A flat surface is necessary to fix these units else the vibration caused by these elements can apparently break copper pipes, leak the coolant or lead to compressor/ condenser damage. Moreover, this vibration becomes noisy and can disturb you and your neighbors.

·         The distance between outdoor and indoor unit- The maximum distance between these units should be 15 meters to prevent the loss of cooling effect from copper tubes.
